Understanding UTM Parameters

How UTM tracking helps you:

UTM Medium tags are URL parameters used to track how participants reach your engagement. They help identify which channels such as email or social media are driving traffic and participation.

When selecting UTM tags:

  • Website Referral: For links posted on your organization's website
  • Social Media: For sharing on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Newsletter: For inclusion in email newsletters
  • Print: For materials that will be printed and distributed
  • Event: For sharing at in-person events or meetings

Copying and Using Your Link

To complete the sharing process:

  1. After selecting your UTM Medium tag, click Copy Web Link URL
  2. A green notification confirms: "Web Link Copied to Clipboard"
  3. The modal provides a link to "Learn about setting up UTM tracking" for additional guidance
  4. Click Close to return to the Share tab

Using your copied link:

  • Paste directly into emails, social media posts, or websites
  • The link works immediately for published questionnaires
  • Participants can access the questionnaire directly without additional steps
  • UTM parameters help you track engagement in your analytics

Link Management and Analytics

Understanding link behavior:

  • Web links remain active as long as your questionnaire is published
  • Links automatically respect your questionnaire's open/close dates
  • If your questionnaire requires access codes, participants will be prompted to enter the code
  • UTM parameters appear in your analytics to show traffic sources

Best practices for link sharing:

  • Use descriptive UTM tags that match your distribution method
  • Test links before large-scale distribution
  • Consider using different UTM tags for different campaigns or audiences
  • Monitor your analytics to understand which channels perform best

Understanding the Details

UTM Parameter System

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to URLs to track the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. When participants click your link, the UTM parameters tell your analytics system how they found your questionnaire, helping you understand which promotion methods work best.

Link Security and Access

Web links respect all your questionnaire's security settings. If you've enabled access codes or restricted visibility, these protections remain in place. Participants will encounter the same access requirements regardless of how they reach your questionnaire.

Integration with Other Sharing Methods

Web links work alongside other sharing methods in the Share tab. You can use the same link across multiple channels or generate different links with specific UTM tags for different distribution methods.

Important Notes

Link Persistence: Web links remain active for the entire lifecycle of your published questionnaire and automatically respect your configured open/close dates.

UTM Tracking: UTM parameters help you understand participant sources but don't affect questionnaire functionality or accessibility.

Access Controls: All questionnaire settings (access codes, visibility restrictions, etc.) apply to web link access.

Analytics Integration: Use UTM parameters to track link performance in your analytics platform and understand which distribution channels drive the most engagement.
