In-Depth Guide

To add languages to your questionnaire

The Languages modal displays all languages available in your Engage platform. Your questionnaire's default language appears grayed out and cannot be removed.

  1. Open language management: Click the Translations button in the questionnaire builder toolbar, then click Manage Languages
  2. Select languages: Check the boxes next to languages you want to add. You can select multiple languages at once
  3. Configure auto-translation: Ensure the Auto-Translation toggle at the bottom is enabled (recommended) for automatic background translations
  4. Apply changes: Click Save to add the selected languages

When you add languages with auto-translation enabled, the system automatically begins translating all questionnaire content in the background. This includes question text, answer options, support text, and helper text.

To remove languages from your questionnaire

  1. Access language settings: Open the Translations sidebar and click Manage Languages
  2. Deselect languages: Uncheck languages you want to remove from your questionnaire
  3. Confirm removal: Click Save to remove the unchecked languages

Important: Removing a language permanently deletes all translations for that language. This action cannot be undone.

Understanding the Details

How It Works

Auto-Translation Process: When you add a new language, the system uses the translation service to automatically translate all questionnaire content. Translation occurs in real-time as you save questions and content.

Language Availability: The available languages are restricted to those configured in your Engage platform. If you need to add additional languages you can do so in your Brand settings.

Default Language: Your questionnaire's default language is determined by your Engage platform setup and cannot be changed or removed. All other languages are translated from this default language.

What to Expect

  • Immediate processing: Translations begin automatically when languages are added
  • Status indicators: The translation sidebar shows completion status for each language
  • Missing translation alerts: Red indicator dots appear when translations are incomplete
  • Real-time updates: New content is automatically translated as you add it to your questionnaire

Important Notes

  • Permissions: Only users with builder status or higher can manage questionnaire languages
  • Translation quality: Auto-translations provide a starting point but may require manual review and editing
  • Special characters: Some special characters cannot be translated and will display as-is
  • Right-to-left languages: Languages like Hebrew are fully supported
  • Publishing warnings: You can publish with incomplete translations, but a warning banner will appear

⚠️ Language removal permanently deletes all translations for that language and cannot be undone.
