Gather visual priority feedback from residents by adding image ranking questions to your engagement questionnaires. Image ranking questions allow respondents to order multiple images from most to least preferred, relevant, or important, making them ideal for design choices, development concepts, facility options, or any scenario where visual comparison drives community decision-making.
Quick Steps
- Navigate to Ask > Surveys > Build select your survey
- Drag "Image Ranking" from the Content sidebar under "OTHER"
- Drop the question into your desired position in the questionnaire
- Configure question text, upload images, and settings in the modal that opens automatically
- Click "Save" to apply changes and see the in-builder preview
In-Depth Guide
Adding a New Image Ranking Question
Access the Questionnaire Builder Navigate to the Engage section and go to the Activities listing screen. Find your engagement questionnaire and select "Edit" to open the Questionnaire Builder interface.
Add the Image Ranking Question From the Content sidebar on the right, locate "Image Ranking" under the "OTHER" section. Drag the Image Ranking element and drop it into your questionnaire at the desired position.
The questionnaire builder will display a drop zone where you can position your new question. Release the Image Ranking element when the drop zone appears in your preferred location.
Configure Question Settings Once you drop the Image Ranking element into your questionnaire, the configuration modal automatically opens. Enter your question text in the main question field. Write clear questions that work well with visual priority ordering. For example, "Rank these park design concepts from most to least preferred" or "Please order these architectural proposals by your preference, starting with your most favored option."
Add Support Text (Optional) Use the Support Text field to provide additional context, instructions, or clarification about how to complete the image ranking. This text appears below the main question and can explain ranking criteria, provide background information about the images, or clarify what the ranking order should represent.
Upload Images for Ranking In the "Options" section, upload the images that respondents will rank in order. Each image represents a visual option that can be prioritized relative to the others.
Image Upload Process:
- Upload Method: Drag and drop image files directly into the upload area or click to browse and select files
- File Requirements:
- Supported formats: .jpg or .png only
- Maximum file size: 10MB per image
- Recommended: High-quality images that display clearly at various screen sizes and maintain visual consistency
Image Selection Guidelines: Create image options that are:
- Visually clear and distinguishable from one another
- Comparable in scope, style, and presentation quality
- Relevant to the decision-making context
- Optimized for both desktop and mobile viewing
Upload multiple images to create the ranking set. Each uploaded image becomes a rankable option in the final question.
Configure Advanced Settings Several toggle options allow you to customize the ranking behavior:
- Limit Items to Rank: Restricts how many images respondents must rank instead of requiring them to rank all uploaded images
- Randomize Options: Presents images in random order to each respondent to reduce position bias
Mark as Required (Optional) Toggle the Required Question setting to make the image ranking question mandatory for questionnaire submission. Required questions must be answered before respondents can proceed or submit their responses.
Save Your Configuration After configuring all settings and uploading images, click "Save" to apply your changes. The modal will close and you'll see an in-builder preview of your image ranking question within the questionnaire.
Editing Existing Image Ranking Questions
Locate and Select the Question In the Questionnaire Builder, find the image ranking question you want to modify. Click on the edit icon on the question block to open the configuration modal and access all editing options.
Modify Question Content Update the question text or support text as needed. You can also replace, add, or remove images using the upload controls. Click "Save" to apply your changes and close the configuration modal. Once saved, you'll see an in-builder preview of your updated question.
Manage Images Replace existing images with new uploads, add additional images to expand the ranking options, or remove images that are no longer relevant. Ensure all images maintain visual consistency and are appropriate for comparative ranking.
Adjust Settings Modify settings like item limits or randomization based on how you want respondents to interact with the visual ranking exercise. Consider how these changes might affect the complexity and time required to complete the question.
Reorder Questions Reposition image ranking questions within your questionnaire flow using two methods:
- Drag-and-drop: Click and hold the question block, then drag it to a new position. The questionnaire will show drop zones indicating valid placement locations.
- Toolbar: Use the reordering options available in the question's toolbar for precise positioning.
Remove Questions To delete an image ranking question, use the delete option in the question's toolbar. The question will be removed immediately without a confirmation prompt.
Question Design Best Practices
Maintain Visual Consistency Use images with similar lighting, composition, style, and quality. Inconsistent visual presentation can bias rankings based on image quality rather than content preferences.
Keep Image Sets Manageable Limit image ranking to 3-6 images for optimal usability. Too many images can overwhelm respondents and make the ranking exercise difficult to complete, especially on mobile devices.
Choose Comparable Images Ensure all images represent options that can be meaningfully compared using the same criteria. Images should show similar types of content at comparable levels of detail.
Optimize for Multiple Screen Sizes Test images across different device sizes to ensure they remain clear and distinguishable on both desktop and mobile displays. Consider how image details will appear on smaller screens.
Provide Clear Context Use support text to explain what the images represent, any relevant background information, and what criteria respondents should use for ranking decisions.
Methodology
Visual Ranking Data Collection Image ranking responses are captured as ordered lists showing the priority sequence selected by each respondent. The system records the position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) assigned to each uploaded image.
Image Display Processing Uploaded images are automatically optimized for web display while maintaining visual quality. The system handles different image dimensions and aspect ratios for consistent presentation in the ranking interface.
Partial Ranking Processing When "Limit Items to Rank" is enabled, only the specified number of top-ranked images are required. Unranked images are recorded separately and can be analyzed as lower-priority or unranked options.
Order Randomization When randomization is enabled, each respondent sees images in a different random initial order. This reduces position bias that might occur if certain images consistently appear first or last.
Language Support Image ranking questions support multi-language engagement questionnaires when configured. Question text and support text are translated, while images remain universal across language versions.
Edge Cases, Exceptions & Known Issues
Drag and Drop Functionality
- Questions must be dropped in valid drop zones within the questionnaire area
- Dropping questions outside the builder area will not add them to your questionnaire
Image Upload Limitations
- Only .jpg and .png formats are supported; other image formats will be rejected
- Files exceeding 10MB will not upload and will display an error message
- Corrupted or invalid image files may fail to upload or display properly
Visual Ranking Interface Challenges
- Very detailed images may be difficult to distinguish when displayed in smaller thumbnail formats
Image Quality and Consistency
- Significant variations in image quality, lighting, or style may bias rankings toward visually superior images
- Images with very different aspect ratios may display inconsistently in the ranking interface
- Low-resolution images may appear blurry when scaled for different screen sizes
Accessibility and Inclusion
- Image ranking questions rely entirely on visual content, which may exclude some respondents
- Alternative text or descriptions are needed for accessible versions
- Color-blind users may have difficulty distinguishing between similar images
Content Management
- Replacing images after data collection begins may affect the validity of existing responses
