Collect precise numerical data from residents by adding number input questions to your engagement questionnaires. Number input questions allow respondents to enter specific quantities, ages, amounts, or other numerical values, providing exact data for demographic information, usage statistics, or quantitative feedback.
Quick Steps
- Navigate to Ask > Surveys > Build select your survey
- Drag "Number Input" from the Content sidebar under "NUMERIC"
- Drop the question into your desired position in the questionnaire
- Configure question text, unit label, and validation settings in the modal that opens automatically
- Click "Save" to apply changes and see the in-builder preview
In-Depth Guide
Adding a New Number Input Question
Access the Questionnaire Builder Navigate to the Engage section and go to the Activities listing screen. Find your engagement questionnaire and select "Edit" to open the Questionnaire Builder interface.
Add the Number Input Question From the Content sidebar on the right, locate "Number Input" under the "NUMERIC" section. Drag the Number Input element and drop it into your questionnaire at the desired position.
The questionnaire builder will display a drop zone where you can position your new question. Release the Number Input element when the drop zone appears in your preferred location.
Configure Question Settings Once you drop the Number Input element into your questionnaire, the configuration modal automatically opens. Enter your question text in the main question field. Write clear questions that specify what numerical information you're seeking. For example, "How many years have you lived in the city?" or "What is your household's annual income?"
Add Support Text (Optional) Use the Support Text field to provide additional context, instructions, or clarification about the numerical input expected. This text appears below the main question and can explain units, provide examples, or clarify what should be included in the number.
Set Unit Label (Optional) Use the Unit Label field to specify the unit of measurement for the numerical input. This label appears with the input field to provide context for respondents. Examples include "$", "years", "miles", "people", or "hours".
Configure Validation Settings Enable the Validation toggle to set numerical constraints for responses:
- Number Type: Choose from the dropdown to specify the type of numbers allowed (e.g., "Whole Numbers Only" or allow decimals)
- Minimum Value: Set the lowest acceptable number (optional)
- Maximum Value: Set the highest acceptable number (optional)
The validation range appears as "Minimum - Maximum" to show respondents the acceptable range.
Mark as Required (Optional) Toggle the Required Question setting to make the number input question mandatory for questionnaire submission. Required questions must be answered before respondents can proceed or submit their responses.
Save Your Configuration After configuring all settings, click "Save" to apply your changes. The modal will close and you'll see an in-builder preview of your number input question within the questionnaire.
Editing Existing Number Input Questions
Locate and Select the Question In the Questionnaire Builder, find the number input question you want to modify. Click on the edit icon on the question block to open the configuration modal and access all editing options.
Modify Question Content Update the question text, support text, or unit label as needed. Ensure your question clearly communicates what numerical information you're seeking. Click "Save" to apply your changes and close the configuration modal. Once saved, you'll see an in-builder preview of your updated question.
Adjust Validation Settings Modify the number type, minimum values, maximum values, or validation requirements based on the type of numerical data you need to collect. Consider how these constraints might affect response rates and data quality.
Reorder Questions Reposition number input questions within your questionnaire flow using two methods:
- Drag-and-drop: Click and hold the question block, then drag it to a new position. The questionnaire will show drop zones indicating valid placement locations.
- Toolbar: Use the reordering options available in the question's toolbar for precise positioning.
Remove Questions To delete a number input question, use the delete option in the question's toolbar. The question will be removed immediately without a confirmation prompt.
Question Design Best Practices
Specify Units Clearly Always include unit labels when the numerical input represents measurements, currency, time periods, or other quantities that require context for accurate responses.
Set Realistic Validation Ranges Configure minimum and maximum values that reflect realistic ranges for your question. Overly restrictive ranges may frustrate respondents, while ranges that are too broad may allow unrealistic responses.
Choose Appropriate Number Types Use "Whole Numbers Only" for counts, ages, or other quantities that don't require decimal precision. Allow decimals for measurements, ratings, or financial amounts that benefit from greater precision.
Provide Context in Support Text Use support text to clarify what should be included in the number, provide examples, or explain how estimates should be handled when exact numbers aren't known.
Consider Questionnaire Flow Place number input questions strategically within your engagement questionnaire. Demographic questions often work well early in questionnaires, while specific usage or preference numbers may be better after context-building questions.
Methodology
Numerical Data Collection Number input responses are captured exactly as entered by respondents. The system preserves the precision of decimal entries when allowed and enforces whole number constraints when specified.
Validation Enforcement When validation is enabled, the system checks responses against the specified number type and range constraints before allowing submission. Invalid responses trigger error messages that guide respondents toward acceptable input.
Unit Label Display Unit labels appear alongside the input field to provide immediate context for the expected numerical format. This helps ensure consistent interpretation of the numerical scale or measurement system.
Data Type Processing The system processes numerical inputs according to the specified number type, converting whole number entries to integers and preserving decimal precision when decimals are allowed.
Language Support Number input questions support multi-language engagement questionnaires when configured. Question text, support text, and unit labels are translated, while numerical formats may adapt to local conventions for decimal separators and number formatting.
Edge Cases, Exceptions & Known Issues
Drag and Drop Functionality
- Questions must be dropped in valid drop zones within the questionnaire area
- Dropping questions outside the builder area will not add them to your questionnaire
Validation Range Conflicts
- Very restrictive ranges may prevent legitimate responses and should be tested before deployment
- Range validation errors appear immediately when respondents enter values outside the specified bounds
Questionnaire Flow Considerations
- Multiple consecutive number input questions may create repetitive response patterns
- Complex numerical questions may require more cognitive effort and time compared to other question types
Response Quality Considerations
- Respondents may provide estimates when exact numbers are unknown, affecting data precision
- Unit confusion may occur if unit labels are unclear or missing
- Very specific numerical requests may receive lower response rates than broader ranges or categories
Data Export and Analysis
- Numerical data exports maintain original precision and formatting
